چکیده

While the discipline of human-computer interaction is beginning to benefit from knowledge capture and reuse methods, lacking are effective tools to provide students with the breadth of knowledge and the importance of multidisciplinary exchanges that are vital to productive scientific disciplines. Our ongoing work on the LINK-UP knowledge management and reuse system provides the basis for multidisciplinary exchanges of knowledge among students by leveraging falsifiable hypotheses called claims. This paper describes three case studies, extracted from different disciplines or environments, in which students extract claims from prior work in an effort to better understand the design decisions made.

The Human-Computer Interaction Spiral

Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for effective human computer interaction. Historically computer science, psychology and the social sciences have operated as discreet disciplines. However with the increased use of Information communication technologies in everyday life issues of appropriate design, functionality and accessibility assume increased importance. In this paper a model fo...

Intermodulation : Improvisation and Collaborative Art Practice for HCI

This paper integrates theory, ethnography, and collaborative artwork to explore improvisational activity as both topic and tool of multidisciplinary HCI inquiry. Building on theories of improvisation drawn from art, music, HCI and social science, and two ethnographic studies based on interviews, participant observation and collaborative art practice, we seek to elucidate the improvisational nat...

Design Practice in Human Computer Interaction Design Education

As the need for Human Computer Interaction (HCI) designers increases so does the need for courses that best prepare students for their future work life. Multidisciplinary teamwork is what very frequently meets the graduates in their new work situations. Preparing students for such multidisciplinary work through education is not easy to achieve. In this paper, we investigate ways to engage compu...

Automating a Design Reuse Facility with Critical Parameters: Lessons Learned in Developing the LINK-UP System

We propose an interface design process compatible with scenario-based design methods, but specifically intended to facilitate three primary goals: design knowledge reuse, comparison of design products, and long-term research growth within HCI. This effort describes a computer-aided design tool suite, LINK-UP, which supports the design process for specific genre of systems that cross many domain...

Overcoming encumbrances on the road to good theory: HCI as a catalyst for unified cognitive science

Current attempts to create a unified, multidisciplinary cognitive science have languished. This paper demonstrates how the human-computer interaction (HCI) paradigm can serve as a unifying framework for cognitive science. HCI has focused the research of many disciplines on the single domain of interaction design. Cognitive science, in contrast, has emphasized multidisciplinary research across a...
